TikTok Subcultures: The emergence of Upcycling

by Mehreen Zahid, Contributing Author

Introduction

Ever wonder how old vintage items are brought back to life? Upcycling has become a popular trend amongst Instagram reels and TikTok. The subculture focuses on utilizing old clothes, thrifting, or picking up free merchandise that is given away on places like Facebook Marketplace to create something completely new. It has become a trend that is emphasizing the importance in reducing environmental waste and living a life of underconsumption. From artistic teenagers interested in getting more creative, to adults simply wanting to live a life of sustainability, upcycling has become the newest social media trend. For example, current trends include users posting clothes they found at local thrift stores, and creating a new outfit that fits with current fashion trends by using scissors and sewing machines. Upcycling has inspired many people to show some extra love to things they already own and transform it into something that can fit into their current lives.

TLDR: Upcycling is a great way to reuse old materials such as clothes and furniture to create it into something brand new. It’s a rising trend on TikTok, inspiring young artists to get creative and turn their old pieces into something that fits with the current fashion and aesthetics.

Tips for Parents & Clinicians

  1. Ask about any areas of interest: Upcycling and DIY crafts can be applied to any item, big or small. Finding the right canvas with your teen is a great start.

  2. Adventure together: it is likely we all have clothes sitting around that need more love. Going through closets together and seeing what can be salvaged is a great way to connect with your kids over an activity.

  3. Have a conversation about fast fashion: Many kids order from popular fast-fashion websites such as Shein, due to their cheap and accessible clothing. Learning about the damaging effect this can have on our climate is a great way to encourage upcycling.
